Light Reading

Truro Brewing Company was established in 2019 by local lesbian couple Jana & Patricia Dellapinna. Jana, our Brew Master, developed our flagship German Style Pilsner named ‘Little Dyke’. The name is not only referencing a lovely nearby community on Little Dyke Lake, but also reclaims the derogatory term ‘Dyke’ used when referring to masculine or non-feminine lesbians.

The term ‘Dyke’ IS NOT interchangeable with the term ‘Lesbian’ as ‘Dyke’ relates to appearance and gender expression whereas ‘Lesbian’ relates to sexual orientation. Also at its conception, the term was used to target women of colour in particular and is why we have chosen to depict this on our can labels for this brew. If you’d like to read more we highly recommend this article by Gloria Bates.
